How it started
The Evolution of Jacques Rautenbach from Studio Drummer to Instrumental Powerhouse
In a world where reinvention often feels like a marketing gimmick, Jacques Rautenbach is the rare artist who has not just pivoted but evolved. What began as a career behind the drum kit — supporting some of South Africa’s most celebrated Afrikaans artists — has transformed into a remarkable journey through the world of instrumental, neoclassical, and cinematic music.
A Quiet Beginning with Loud Beats
Before Jacques Rautenbach was a name on global streaming charts, he was the rhythmic backbone behind more than 10 gold and platinum-selling albums. For 28 years, Jacques built a formidable career as a studio drummer, working with South African icons like Bok van Blerk, Lianie May, Eden, Bobby van Jaarsveld, Kurt Darren, Steve Hofmeyr, Ray Dylan, Ricus Nel, Pieter Koen, and Gerhard Steyn — to name just a few. He wasn’t just recording in studio booths. Jacques was also a fixture on the live performance circuit, gracing stages from Aardklop to KKNK, InniBos to Mighty Men, performing alongside Coenie de Villiers, Anna Davel, Nádine, Dewald Gouws, and Nataniël. Yet beneath the snare rolls and cymbal crashes, a composer waited — one with a cinematic ear and a melodic soul.
A Shift in Focus
In December 2016, Jacques released Shades of Blue, his debut solo album. What might have seemed like a side project at the time turned out to be the beginning of a complete transformation. Since then, Jacques has composed, produced, and released 10 full-length albums, 5 EPs, and 9 singles, weaving together neoclassical ambiance, emotional storytelling, and rich instrumental textures. His musical evolution has been nothing short of meteoric. From radio play in Romania and the Netherlands to streaming fans in 106 countries on Spotify, his work is resonating globally. Jacques has had two iTunes #1 singles in Belarus and recently held the #1 to #4 spots simultaneously on iTunes Classical in South Africa. In 2024, his single “Neverending” not only topped the iTunes charts in South Africa but also won the Aitsa Music Award for Best Instrumental — a career-defining moment that confirmed his arrival as a serious force in the genre. He is currently ranked #1 in the Global Classical Chart on ReverbNation, standing as a leading independent voice in the instrumental and light classical space.
Collaborations That Span Continents
One of the defining features of Jacques’s career is his ability to attract world-class collaborators. He’s worked with top South African talents like violinists Evert van Niekerk, Lizelle Le Roux, and JPO’s first chair cellist Susan Mouton, alongside international names such as Israeli violinist Ariella Zeitlin, German-based violist Judith Klins, and the legendary American saxophonist Dave Koz.Notably, he recorded on a Coenie de Villiers track featuring Hugh Masekela on trumpet — a milestone that speaks to Jacques’s credibility and reach. Upcoming collaborations are equally exciting, including projects with Tina Guo (renowned for her work with Hans Zimmer) and Cape Town classical guitar maestro James Grace.
Recognition & Reinvention
Jacques’s recent albums have received consistent praise from both critics and fans. His 2023 release Lost was named Album of the Week on Fine Music Radio, and his compositions are routinely featured on stations like FMR, Classic FM, RSG, and Pretoria FM. He’s signed to Alcon / Sleeping Giant (ASG) Records, a respected Los Angeles-based publishing company, and manages his own label, New Groove Studios, distributed through The Orchard International. His music is now licensed for use in film and television, a growing area that reflects his cinematic sensibility.
More Than Music
Jacques is not just a musician. He’s a music producer, composer, graphic designer, video editor, sound engineer, and television editor. His visual work has appeared on M-Net, SuperSport, SABC, and his design clients have ranged from Revlon and FNB, to CANSA and MTN Zambia. His unique combination of artistic vision and business. Strategy has made him a sought-after creative across multiple platforms. Whether it's producing music videos (16 of his own which have aired on KykNET NOU!) or directing for television, Jacques brings the same attention to detail and emotional depth that define his music.
The Sound of Now
Rautenbach’s music cannot be boxed into a single genre. It blends neoclassical phrasing with cinematic dynamics, ambient moods, and even touches of electronica — a hybrid style that has become his signature. His compositions are equally at home on a concert stage, as background to a visual story, or in the ears of a focused listener on a rainy afternoon. Live, Jacques offers a versatile experience: from solo piano performances to ensembles with violin, cello, and guitar, and even full band shows. His concerts are a perfect fit for theatre venues, boutique festivals, corporate events, intimate house concerts, or art gallery installations.
